Lake sturgeon are one of the most threatened species in the Great Lakes. They have a long life span of 50 to 150 years, can grow to be more than six feet long and weigh up to 200 lbs. However, the species needs our help to persist!
In 2016, the Zoo received funds to construct a streamside facility near the Maumee River to hatch and rear sturgeon with the goal that the fish will return to the waterway to spawn in approximately 15 years. Last year, along with partner organizations, the Zoo released 3,000 fish into the River to begin our re-introduction effforts. Each fish is marked with a unique microchip allowing permanent identification of that individual. If the sponsored fish is ever recovered as part of the on-going monitoring efforts, Toledo Zoo staff will notify the sponsor.
