TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – It’s a day Toledoan Gerry Mazur won’t soon forget.

“It was just amazing to see just the number of police cars, the number of people that attended,” said Mazur. “I mean, there were police from all over the area.”

Mazur is a drum major in The Toledo Firefighters Pipes and Drum Band.

Friday, he traveled to Westerville to honor fallen officers Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli at their funeral.

“You do what you can when you can do it,” said Mazur. “You hope you never have to, but you go there to help in any way you can and being dignity to it and lay them to rest in the proper way.”

The two officers were shot and killed in the line of duty on February 10th while handling a domestic dispute. Both were veterans of the force.

“You hate anytime it happens, obviously, but you do it for the honor of the people that have fallen and their families,” said Mazur.

He was one of about 100 others who performed in honor of the fallen officers.

Bagpipers and drummers from both police and fire bands from across Ohio made up the corps.

“It’s very humbling, especially when you’re standing in the front like that with the other drum majors,” said Mazur.

Mazur has been with Toledo’s pipes and drums for more than a decade.

He’s been a part of multiple services, but admits it’s hard to ignore the emotion with ones like those for fallen heroes.

“You’re standing there at attention. You try not to let the emotions get to you, but it is tough—and everybody around you—and the kids is the toughest part of it,” said Mazur. “To see them sitting there and having to deal with the loss of their father.”

While seeing heartache in others is never easy, Mazur says he’s humbled to honor those who work to keep us safe.

“You go there to help in any way you can and being dignity to it and lay them to rest in the proper way,” said Mazur.
