There will be a change the top of Toledo city government.  With 100% of the precincts reporting, Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz has defeated incumbent mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson 56% to 44%.

Kapszukiewicz claimed victory and told supporters “tonight, Toledoans voted for a new direction.” He told 13abc’s Amy Montgomery that he is “excited about getting to work” and lead the city. He extended his gratitude to Mayor Hicks-Hudson. She “served with grace and dignity at a very difficult time…I don’t want that to get lost.” The mayor told 13abc’s Bill Hormann live shortly after 11:00pm that she called Kapszukiewicz to concede the race.

Hicks-Hudson sought to lead the city for another four years by suggesting that the best was still ahead for Northwest Ohio.

Kapszukiewicz made the case for change. During a recent 13abc-Toledo Blade debate, he repeatedly sought to portray Hicks-Hudson as reactive. Hicks-Hudson criticized her opponent for being a political opportunist and insisted there has been significant progress in Toledo since she succeeded Mayor D. Michael Collins who died in office in 2015.
