(TOLEDO) – The Toledo Museum of Art is best known for its 30,000 precious works of art. But in the future the museum grounds will also serve as an “urban park” and oasis in Toledo. A new master plan for the next two decades includes new green space and enhancing existing gardens and grounds.

The museum on Monroe Street unveiled a master plan on Tuesday. In a news release, the museum says the master plan is intended “to unify its 40-acre campus and increase accessibility, sustainability and greenspace” during a presentation and news conference featuring Director Brian Kennedy and others.

Toledo Museum of Art was founded by Edward Drummond Libbey in 1901. In 2006, the Glass Pavilion was added featuring extensive collections of glass art and glassmaking facilities. The museum’s collection includes more than 30,000 works in 35 galleries, the Sculpture Garden and Glass Pavilion.

TMA began developing a master plan two years ago. The plan calls for increasing the museum’s accessibility and visibility by unifying a dozen buildings and “weaving the site into the broader urban fabric of downtown Toledo.”
