TOLEDO (WTVG) — Consider it a show of force. Specifically, the workforce.

Hundreds of union members hit the pavement this morning in what some call a display of Toledo’s greatest resource: It’s people.

“They get together, clean everything. You know, spit shine it. Make it look pretty for everybody out here, so it’s a lot of fun,” said John Townes, with Local 18 Operating Engineers, District 2.

Every year, hundreds start the day-long celebration watching or walking in the annual Labor Day parade.

“Feels good. Feels good,” commented Jovita Robertson, with the Toledo Federation of Teachers. “Everybody’s hard work all these years. All these workers. Feels good.”

“It’s nice,” said Julie LaCourse, a teacher at Beverly Elementary. “Especially when we get to see some of our former students and they wave at us.”

Those supporting the workforce were flanked by those supporting local politicians.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D) Ohio, was the Grand Marshal for the first time. She says she’s there to support the local laborers.

“I want to cheer for them,” explained Kaptur. “They’re the ones that get up early in the morning and go to work. Many times, very dangerous jobs where life and limb are at stake. I mean, people who have been injured on the job all the time, my own brother was one of those people.”

The parade stepped off at the corner of Summit and Monroe at 9:00AM and continued through the streets of downtown Toledo.
